Tiny Toon Adventures on DVD: How I Spent My Vacation

Coming August 14, 2012, on DVD:  Tiny Toon Adventures' How I Spent My Vacation.

Above:  On the left, the new artwork for the 2012 DVD cover.  To the right, the artwork on the VHS cover, when "How I Spent My Vacation" was first released in 1992 as the first direct-to-video original animated feature.

Back then, the folks at Warner Bros. Home Entertainment were dedicated to the notion that short movie titles were the only way to go, so they insisted that we change our original title, "How I Spent My Summer Vacation," to the insignificantly shorter title that omitted the word "summer."

These are the same marketing geniuses who demanded that we change the title of the Animaniacs direct-to-video feature from "It's a Wakko Wakko Wakko Wakko Wish" to "Wakko's  Wish."

I much prefer our original titles on both.

As for the cover art, new and old, above  --  what can I say?   It's like the current regime at Warner Bros. isn't even trying.

  1. First off: I agree. The original titles are much, much better. Wakko's Wish's original actually makes sense.

Second: I'm glad this is on DVD at last! I'm hoping for a good restoration of it. :D

  2. I stopped expecting Warner Bros. to treat their properties with respect when I saw Bugs Bunny was off model on the Looney Tunes DVD cover art. (They left out his buck teeth. Maybe I'm nitpicky, but I always thought that was one of his defining characteristics.) So now I'm just grateful that this stuff is being released at all! I'm excited for this- "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" is the best of Tiny Toons.

  3. I don't understand how you can be in charge of marketing or designing and it not be totally obvious that the old artwork is 100 times better than the new art. It's not even a close contest.

I've always called this movie "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" because that's the title of the essay we always had to write when we got back to school, and I just assumed that's where the name came from. Only now do I realize my mistake!

  4. Sad really, the classic VHS cover was perfect. Couldn't they just go with that?

  5. You'd think they'd go with the old artwork. But noooooooooooooooooooooooo.

  6. I prefer the old cover, but at least, they did not put too much texture on the new cover.

I am totally agree about the problematic of the title.
I must also say that Warner also change the name of some characters in others languages. This is very annoying.
I have seen most of the cartoons in English (with subtitles), unlike the other people. So when I speak with someone about it, there is misunderstanding.

    1. It's always that way it seems when you don't keep a name universal.

  7. Yes! Yes! Finally! An official release of the Tiny Toons' first (and so far, only) movie ever! Now, if only they'd put "Wakko's Wish" on DVD. ...and the rest of "Tiny Toon Adventures" and "Animaniacs" for that matter.

  8. Yea, It makes me wonder why Warners just cant ask TMS's/Telecom's staff (like Toshihiko Masuda and Kazuhide Tomonaga) to do the box art?, Tomonaga did the box art for the Japanese Sherlock Hound movie Blu Ray (see hear http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Hound and http://www.telecom-anime.com/telecom/news/n2006_2009_ct.html if you what to see it from TMS/Telecom themselves);, Why Dose it Warners let them do it?, is it because of cost? or what?; And also, why no Blu Ray (as this is shot on 35mm film and has been showed in a movie theater once)?; Again, cost?, what?

Anyway, I am very glad that Warners has finaly has putted this out on DVD and I will buy it.

  9. This is exciting news! I love HISMV!

At least the DVD cover is a little better than the Season 1 and 2 DVD art. They look slightly less demented.

  10. I'm glad Tiny Toons: How I Spent My Vacation is being released on DVD. I hope the rest of the series gets released. There was a different cover on the UK VHS http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51H8SRKY21L._SL500_AA300_.jpg which looked the best.

Will the rest of Tiny Toons, the rest of Animaniacs, Wakko's Wish & Road Rovers be released?

  13. The new artwork looks like something used for one of the comic adaptations. Personally, I think the vhs cover worked better.

  14. I thought the same thing when I saw the new cover. I liked the old cover better. The characters don't look as stiff and motionless and there's even some shading. Either way, I'm glad it is finally coming to DVD.

  15. I especially like how Dizzy is somehow emerging from the hub of that ride. That was the funniest part of the movie. Oh, wait...

  16. I just got mine and wow this cover is embarrassing. They colored Babs' tooth red and they spelled Hamton as HamPton twice on the back of the case. They should offer to replace the DVD box art with an updated version of the old one for everyone who purchased this abomination. On the bright side, I also found a brand new in plastic VHS of this movie for only 15 bucks last week.

  17. I agree...the artwork is atrocious

  18. I just found out that there is going to be a Volume 3 to the Tiny Toons DVD series that will be released January next year. It's supposed to be containing Season 2 & 4 episodes of Season 3. However, not all of season 2 is going to be released. The episode "Elephant Issues" is going to be missing. I understand the reasons why it is being avoided but myself & many other fans of Tiny Toons are not at all happy about this. Is there anyway for them to change their minds and have the episode on the DVD even if it's put in a "Special Features" section?

  19. Very happy to hear about the dvd release!

  20. I am excited about it. I'm so excited I'm telling everyone I know. Is there any chance "Elephant Issues" can be on the DVD too? Who do I contact?
